สโมสรบีจี ปทุม ยูไนเต็ด ประกาศแต่งตั้ง แมทธิว สมิธ เข้ามาทำหน้าที่หัวหน้าผู้ฝึกสอนคนใหม่ สำหรับการแข่งขันฤดูกาลนี้
โดยในฐานะนักเตะ แมทธิว สมิธ เคยพาบริสเบน โรว์ ทีมดังแห่งศึก เอ ลีก ออสเตรเลียคว้าแชมป์ระดับเมเจอร์ 5 รายการ ก่อนจะย้ายมาค้าแข้งในประเทศไทยกับบีจี ปทุม ยูไนเต็ด ในปี 2015 ซึ่งแข้งชาวออสเตรเลียได้รับโอกาสสวมปลอกแขนกัปตันทีมของ “เดอะ แรบบิท” และเป็นหนึ่งในผู้เล่นในประวัติศาสตร์ของสโมสรที่ลงสนามเกิน 114 นัด ก่อนจะย้ายไปร่วมทีม คิตฉี เอสซี ในลีกประเทศฮ่องกงในปี 2018
ในปี 2020 ย้ายไปร่วมทีม บริสเบน ซิตี้ เอฟซี ในฐานะผู้เล่นและผู้อำนวยการฟุตบอล ก่อนจะรับตำแหน่งเฮดโค้ช พาทีมคว้าดับเบิลแชมป์ได้แก่ฟุตบอล ควีนส์แลนด์ พรีเมียร์ลีก รอบฤดูกาลปกติ ด้วยสถิติชนะ 20 เกม จาก 20 นัด และคว้าแชมป์รอบไฟนอล พร้อมรับรางวัล โค้ช ยอดเยี่ยมประจำปีของศึก ฟุตบอล ควีนส์แลนด์ พรีเมียร์ลีก
ล่าสุด สมิธ รับหน้าที่ตำแหน่งผู้จัดการทั่วไปฝ่ายการตลาด (General Manager – Commercial) ให้กับสโมสรบริสเบน โรว์ ก่อนจะตกลงรับตำแหน่ง กุนซือบีจี ปทุม ยูไนเต็ด โดย แมทธิว สมิธ มีโปรแกรมนำทีมลงฝึกซ้อม เตรียมทำการแข่งขันในเกมนัดถัดไปทันที

BG UPDATE : Matthew Smith returns to BG Pathum United as head coach.
We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Matthew Smith as BG Pathum United’s new head coach for the ongoing 2022-23 domestic season.
During his playing career, the Australian has led A League’s powerhouse Brisbane Roar to five major trophies. Before joining BGPU in 2015 as captain of the Rabbits. He is one of the few players who reached a 114-match milestone for the club before joining Hong Kong’s Kitchee SC in 2018.
In 2020, Smith joined Brisbane City FC as a player and football director. Smith later took up the position of the head coach and led his team to a double by lifting the Football Queensland Premier League Premiership by winning all 20 of the 20 matches played and the Championship, earning him the award for the Football Queensland Premier League Coach of the Year. Prior to confirming his agreement as the new head coach of BG Pathum United, Smith held a position as General Manager – Commercial of Brisbane Roar. Smith will take charge of the team training immediately in preparation for the upcoming fixtures.
